    Course Description And Purpose

PSB 4002 is a course introducing students to the biological foundations of behavior, and should be taken by advanced undergraduate students (junior/senior status) only. The course is organized into four units: (1) the neural foundations of behavior, (2) motivation and emotion, (3) sensory systems, and (4) complex behavior. Topics include nervous system organization, drugs and addiction, learning and memory, psychological disorders, and sleep and consciousness.

    Course Objectives

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

    • Describe and explain how the nervous system works
    • Critically discuss the reciprocal relationship between biology and psychology
    • Understand typical and atypical brain-behavior relationships

    Teaching Methodology

This course is a hybrid class. Half of the classroom time is replaced with online activities. You must be able to complete online assignments in a timely manner each Sunday, and attend class each week on Tuesdays from 11:00 - 12:15 pm in SIPA 220. This course is not a fully online class. If you cannot reliably attend class on Tuesdays, you should not take this course. You are expected to maintain a courteous and professional manner when interacting with your professor and classmates both in class as well as online.

Time spent on this hybrid course is no different from time you would expect to spend in a typical face-to-face course. You should plan to spend 9-12 hours per week on this course, including reading the textbook, completing online assignments, taking quizzes, attending class, and other activities to prepare for exams. A study guide prepared by your professor is distributed for each of the four major units.  An optional study workbook prepared by the publisher is also available for purchase to help you prepare for the course.

We will use online activities for:

    • Giving an overview of major concepts, minor points, and how they fit together
    • Completing reflection journals to help synthesize your learning
    • Watching videos and participating in discussion boards
    • Taking low stakes quizzes to identify concepts you did not understand from the reading
    • Completing assignments to practice difficult concepts or apply learning

We will use class time for:

    • Explaining and practicing difficult concepts
    • Asking and answering questions
    • Taking high stakes tests

    Important Information

    Policies

Please review the FIU's Policies webpage. The policies webpage contains essential information regarding guidelines relevant to all courses at FIU, as well as additional information about acceptable etiquette for courses with an online component. You will be held to these policies, so please read them carefully.

    Office Hours Policies:

You do not need an appointment to come to office hours. Your professor and any teaching assistant staff are available in their offices during the posted times and see students on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you cannot make the posted times, please send an email to make an appointment. If you are struggling with the material, please come in ASAP. If a significant personal or medical problem arises, do not wait to contact your professor to make appropriate arrangements. Do not wait until it’s too late to get help!

    Email Policies:

Please address your email “Dear Professor Nelson” or "Dear Megan" and sign your full name at the bottom. Include your PID in all correspondence and the name of the course. Your professor and any teaching assistant staff reserve the right not to respond to unprofessional emails. Blackboard does not send an alert for messages; do not use the Blackboard system to contact us. In this class, the typical response time for an email is 1 day.

    Technical Requirements & Skills

One of the greatest barriers to taking a hybrid course is a lack of basic computer literacy. By computer literacy we mean being able to manage and organize computer files efficiently, and learning to use your computer's operating system and software quickly and easily. Keep in mind that this is not a computer literacy course; but students enrolled in online courses are expected to have moderate proficiency using a computer. Please go to the "What's Required" webpage to find out more information on this subject.

You are responsible for ensuring that you have access to a computer that is compatible with Blackboard, that you have access to a reliable internet connection, and that you check your FIU e-mail at least daily. The online assignments are not designed to be completed on a mobile device.

This course utilizes the following tools online:

Communication in this course will take place via Email.

The Email feature is an external communication tool that allows users to send emails to users enrolled within the course. Emails are sent to the student’s FIU email on record. The Email tool is located on the Course Menu, on the left side of the course webpage.

Visit our Writing Resources webpage for more information on professional writing and technical communication skills.

In order to mitigate any issues with your computer and online assessments, it is your responsibility to make sure your computer meets the minimum hardware requirements.

If you have a technical issue while completing any online assignment, you must contact FIU Online Support Services. You will not be allowed to make-up work for technical reasons if you have not filed a report with the help desk. All assignments must be posted online in the proper place to receive credit. No paper or email copies will be accepted. If you find you have posted in the wrong place accidentally, please email your professor immediately to have it corrected, and then re-post in the correct location.

    Reflection Journals - 120 points

There is a journal entry due for each module (13 total). Each journal reflection is based on a question from the corresponding chapter in your textbook (note: we are not covering chapters 7 or 13 in the textbook). The question is answered in your private online journal on Blackboard. Your professor and the TA will read the journals weekly. Other students will not read or respond to your reflections on the course material. The purpose of the journal is to get you to think deeper, and check your understanding of the required reading. You should complete the journal entry after reading the chapter. You can drop your lowest grade (i.e., skip 1 journal entry).

    Journal Expectations:

    • The journal assignment is 1 question based on the assigned chapter in the textbook.
    • Responses posted by 11:59 p.m. on the due date receive full credit (10 points).
    • Your response should be 10 sentences in length.
    • Any entry not meeting the length requirement will be penalized 2 points.
    • Once the deadline has passed, no make-ups are permitted without documentation of an excused absence.
    • Your best 12 journal entries will be counted towards your final grade in the course.

    List of Journal Questions

    Quizzes - 120 points

In order to mitigate any issues with your computer and online assessments, it is very important that you take the "Practice Quiz" from each computer you will be using to take your graded quizzes and exams. It is your responsibility to make sure your computer meets the minimum hardware requirements.

There is one quiz for every module (13 total). All quizzes are based on the corresponding chapter in the textbook, and should be treated as reading quizzes to check your knowledge. Quizzes are due by 11:59 p.m. on the due date. You can drop your lowest grade. You are strongly encourage not to skip any quizzes, as the quizzes help you learn the material for the exams.

    Quiz Expectations:

    • Each quiz will be available for 10 minutes only once started.
    • There are 10 questions on each quiz and all questions will be displayed at once.
    • All quiz questions are in True/False format and worth 1 point each (10 points total).
    • Questions are in random order for each student to prevent collusion.
    • Your score will be immediately available after you finish the quiz.
    • Correct answers will be available after all the quizzes have been graded.
    • Once the deadline has passed, no make-ups are permitted without documentation of an excused absence.
    • No special browser is required to take the quizzes.
    • Your best 12 quizzes will be counted towards your final grade in the course.

Assessments in this course are not compatible with mobile devices and should not be taken through a mobile phone or a tablet. If you need further assistance please contact FIU Online Support Services.

    Discussion Forums

Keep in mind that your discussion forum postings will be seen by other members of the course. Care should be taken when determining what to post. Please also double-check that you are posting in the correct place. This course uses separate Discussion Boards for each video and activity assignment. You will not earn credit if you post on the wrong board.

Video Discussion Board Posts - 130 points

Keep in mind that your discussion forum postings will be seen by other members of the course. Care should be taken when determining what to post. Please make sure you post on the correct Discussion Board. You will not earn credit if you post on the wrong board.

There is an assigned video for each module (13 in total). After watching the video, your task is to write two possible exams question and post them to a discussion board for that video. Questions can be multiple choice or true or false only, and must include the answer (5 points each). If you do not provide an answer, you will receive half credit for that question (2.5 points). Your professor reviews the questions and chooses up to 5 student submissions for the exam. Some videos are longer than others, so please give yourself plenty of time to complete these assignments.

    Video Discussion Board Post Expectations:

    • Keep in mind that the discussion board is public, and everyone in the class can read it.
    • The deadline to post is 11:59 p.m. on the due date.
    • You are not required to reply to other video discussion board posts.
    • You will not be able to see the video discussion board until you post.
    • Once the deadline has passed, no make-ups are permitted without documentation of an excused absence.
    • If you do not post T/F or MC questions with the answer indicated, you will earn a 0.
    • If you do not post questions relevant to the video, you will earn a 0.
    • If you do not post on the correct board, you will earn a 0.
    • All 13 video discussion board posts count towards your final grade in the course.

    Activities - 130 points

There is one assigned activity for each module (13 total). Activities are used to check your understanding of difficult concepts. Some activities will be started or explained in class, so it is important that you attend class regularly. You may be asked to complete the activity on your own, or in groups. For individual assignments, post your completed work to the discussion board for that activity. For group assignments, your professor creates a thread for each group on the activity's discussion board. Each person must post in the group's thread. The final post in the thread should reflect everyone's contributions. The final post in the thread is what is graded. You will not earn credit if you post in another thread or contribute work only through the file share or email tools. If you submit the assignment independently, or do not respond to your group, you will earn a 0.

    Activity Expectations:

    • Keep in mind that the discussion board is public, and everyone in the class can read it.
    • If you do not post on the correct board, you will earn a 0.
    • You are required to post in your group's thread to earn credit for group assignments. There are no exceptions to this rule.
    • Points are earned on a check (8) or check plus (10) scale. Each activity contains instructions on how to earn a check plus.
    • No make-ups are permitted without documentation of an excused absence.
    • All 13 activities will be counted towards your final grade in the course.

    Unit Exams - 400 points

There are four non-cumulative unit exams in this course and they are weighed equally. All exams are given during class meetings on Tuesdays from 11:00-12:15 pm.

    Exam Expectations:

    • Each exam is worth 100 points and will consist of 50 multiple choice questions plus an open-ended extra credit question.
    • Please be on time. If you arrive late after an exam has been turned in, you will not be allowed to take the exam.
    • Exams are collected at 12:15 pm. No time extensions will be given if you are late.
    • A pencil and eraser are required to fill out the scantron. Please bring a pen for the extra credit question.
    • No exam make-ups are permitted without documentation of an excused absence.
    • The dates of the exams are posted at the start of the semester and are non-negotiable.
    • There is no final exam in this course.
    • All 4 exams will be counted towards your final grade in the course.

    Academic Integrity

Any instance of academic misconduct (e.g., plagiarism, cheating, collusion, dishonesty) will be reported to the University and Department of Psychology for further action. Please refer to your student handbook, or ask if you are unsure about what constitutes misconduct. Details can also be found at this website: https://ugrad.fiu.edu/academic_misconduct/

The policy for this course is an automatic “0” for academic misconduct on an exam. Other instances of academic misconduct will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

    Grading

This course uses the FIU Early Alert System. Alerts are sent to students and their advisors after the first exam. Your professor may also send you a personal email if you are struggling in the course. FIU does not give an A+. Psychology majors are required to earn a C or higher (i.e., at least 626 points in this course). Please see the extra credit policy for details on how you can improve your grade.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I MISS CLASS OR AN ONLINE ASSIGNMENT?

Make-up work is only permitted for excused absences with documentation. This includes, but is not limited to, doctor’s excuses (for yourself or immediate relatives), athletic events, FIU-related scholarly events (e.g., conference), death in the family, religious observances, or auto accident (not a traffic jam). Work is not an excused absence. Vacation is not an excused absence. Weather is not an excused absence. Traffic and parking are not excused absences. Please do not take this class if it conflicts with your work schedule.

Also, keep in mind that documentation must be dated for the assignment or exam that you missed. As soon as you are able to, contact your professor directly by email (elnelson@fiu.edu) to discuss your situation. Do not wait until the end of the semester to discuss an ongoing situation with your professor. If you have an issue completing an online assignment due to technical problems, email your professor and contact FIU Online Support immediately.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS IN THIS COURSE

    1. Start with the assigned reading. Give yourself ample time to read for understanding, not for speed. Take your own notes.
    2. The next step in your learning is to review the lecture powerpoints posted by your professor. Be sure to pay attention to unique material that is not in your textbook. The powerpoints should help you focus on the important material, and expand on what you’ve read. The powerpoints are meant to be very descriptive, but please contact your professor if you have a question or need clarification on something. It is recommended that you also take your own notes on the powerpoints. Write on the slides or in the margins to facilitate learning (either printed out, or digitally).
    3. Come to class prepared. Your professor will highlight key points from the module.
    4. After you've read the chapter, write your reflection journal entry. Remember it must be at least 10 sentences in length. Put some effort into understanding the question. You can drop your lowest grade, or skip one journal on a busy week.
    5. After you’ve done your journal, you’re ready to take the reading quiz. Remember, you can have your textbook and notes on hand for reference during the quiz. Quizzes are timed, so don’t start until you feel ready. However, you can drop your lowest grade. Be sure to get your quiz in on time. No late quizzes are accepted without documentation.
    6. Put time aside to watch the assigned video for each module. Make sure you submit two possible exam questions with answers on-time. No late video posts are accepted without documentation.
    7. Make sure you dedicate time each week to get the module's assigned activity done. Some weeks we may start the activity in class, and finish it online. Some weeks the activity may be completed on your own, but other weeks require that you show you can work in a group. Make sure you post on time. No late posts are accepted without documentation.
    8. When you’re preparing for the exam, work through everything on the study guide provided by your professor. Everything on the study guide will be on the exam. Some students find it helpful to download the study guide first, and use it to structure notes as they work through the unit.
    9. If you don’t understand something, send an email to your professor (elnelson@fiu.edu). Ask for help!
    10. Do not cram for exams. Study over multiple days. Get a good night’s sleep before exams.
    11. Do not wait until the last minute to do your extra credit. Get assignments in early!
    12. If you have an emergency, contact your professor as soon as you can. Absences must have documentation to be excused. It’s your responsibility to understand this policy.
    13. Budget your time. Stick to it. Each Tuesday you should be in class for an hour and 15 minutes. Throughout the week you will want to work on the online assignments. Online assignments are always due on Sundays. Do not try to start Sunday evening or you will likely not be able to get everything submitted on time. You can work ahead on modules in the unit if your schedule permits.

HOW CAN I IMPROVE MY GRADE?

You can earn extra credit in this course by submitting article assignments. For each chapter, there are accompanying journal articles on the SAGE textbook website. For each article, there is a set of posted questions. Typically there are three questions per article, but four of the chapters have an article with four questions (hint: picking a four-question article earns more points). You must answer all the questions for the article you chose. Responses are graded on effort. You are allowed to do 1 article per chapter, and you earn 1 point per question. You may also do 1 article for the 2 chapters that we are skipping (7 and 13). Extra credit will post to a separate column in your gradebook on Blackboard so that you can track it throughout the semester.

Type your extra credit assignment and submit a Word document or a PDF by email directly to your professor (elnelson@fiu.edu). No other file types are accepted. Do not type your answers into the body of an email. Assignments are not accepted through Blackboard or in print copy. Make sure your name and PID are at the top of the document, and in the file name. Do not label your file 'biopsych extra credit', as it does not distinguish your work from other students. Type the chapter number and the citation of your article (copy from webpage) at the top of the file. For each question, type the question first, and then your answer underneath. You should aim for 3-5 sentences per question. If you do not use the proper format, it will be returned to you for correction. If you are planning to submit more than one article, please put all of your responses into the same file and send one attachment when you’re finished instead of 15 separate emails.

You can earn up to 49 points towards your point total for the class by completing extra credit article assignments.  Extra credit can be turned in any time, but the deadline is Sunday 12/4 by 11:59 pm. No late extra credit assignments will be accepted for any reason. Keep in mind that email is timestamped. There is no other way to improve your grade in this course. Do not ask your professor to change your grade.
